The Govind Wildlife Sanctuary constitutes of Rupin and Supin ranges of erstwhile of Tons Forest Division and was notified vide then U.P. Govt. G.O.No 720/XIV-725/1953 dated, March 22, 1955. It was named after the veteran leader, freedom figther and Bharatratna Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant, the first chief Minister of the state. It is situated in UttarKashi district of Uttarakhand and spread over an area of 957.97 sq. km. The entire area lies in the middle and greater Himalayas between, 1300 mt. to 6323 mt. Considering the biological and geomorphological importance of the area, later on among the part of Sanctuary an area 472.08 sqkms. was notified as National Park, vide G.O. No. 394/ xiv -3-137/86 Dated 26.2.1990. Geographically, this P.A is situated in the north-western part of Garhwal Himalaya, within the co-ordinates 770-47'-780-37 longitude and 350-55'-310-17' latitude. The P.A. shares its northern borders with Himachal Pradesh. The average annual rainfall varies from 1000 to 1500 mm, most of which occurs as monsoon rains (July to Sept.) The entire area of the P.A. is subjected to light to very heavy snow fall in the winters. The final notification of the Govind National Park has been notified as per Uttarakhand Government's G.O. No. 4000/x-2-2004-19(1)/2004 dated 09.10.2013 and similarly the final notification of Govind Wildlife Sanctuary also notified vide G.O. No. 4001/x-19(1)/2004 dated 19.10.2013 respectively. As per final Notification the total area of the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary is notified as 481.05 sq. Kms and 558.88 sq. Kms. area as of National Park. The basic objective of the creation of this Protected Area was the protection of an endangered elusive cat, Snow leopard (Panthera Uncia).
